Yale Opera presents a new production of Stravinsky’s masterpiece The Rake’s Progress with the Yale Philharmonia, under the baton of Metropolitan Opera conductor Daniela Candillari with staging by Danilo Gambini.
A classic Faustian tale of be careful what you wish for, Stravinsky’s only full-length opera depicts the misadventures of Tom Rakewell. Lured with a promised inheritance into unknowingly made a deal with the devil, Tom leaves his fiancée, Anne Trulove, in the country in search of the excitement of London. His mysterious new servant Nick Shadow is only too happy to oblige in his quest leading Tom on a path of debauchery. With a libretto by poet W.H. Auden and Chester Kallman inspired by Hogarth’s series of paintings “A Rake’s Progress,” the opera features a clever neoclassical score and juicy roles for the phenomenal young cast.
